New book release coming from Matthew D. Taylor.

Defying Tyrants: Following Jesus in a World of Christian Antichrists
by Matthew D. Taylor

"Quite simply, Defying Tyrants is a book every Christian should read." --Kristin Kobes Du Mez, author of Jesus and John Wayne.

In this powerhouse book, an expert on Christian extremism issues a profound and biblical rebuke to all who would claim the name of Jesus but disdain his way.

Christian fixation with political power is the theological emergency of our time, and in Defying Tyrants, Matthew D. Taylor, author of The Violent Take It by Force, traces the origins of Christian supremacy. Jesus directed his followers away from the race for power, but somewhere along the way, many Christians turned Jesus into a mascot for imperial domination. Where did it all go so wrong?

A trenchant reckoning with the murder, mayhem, and monsters of Christianity--from the early church and the Crusades to colonialism, slavery, and the Holocaust--Defying Tyrants demonstrates how imperialism has infected the body of Christ. With cogent argument and moral precision, Taylor excavates scriptural texts and unpacks the notion of Christian antichrists. When the term antichrist occurs in the Bible, it's frequently plural--not "The Antichrist" who populated the nightmares of fundamentalism's young people. Antichrists originate within the church and abuse people in the name of Christ. Christian antichrists justify harm and vengeance theologically, pointing people away from the God who entered humanity as a colonized peasant in the hinterlands of the Roman empire.

Both searing polemic and lyrical meditation, Defying Tyrants challenges us to put steel in the spine of Christian resistance to tyrants and reprimands the Christian leaders who bless them. It also spotlights a countertradition of Christians who have lived generous lives of sacrifice and stood up to authoritarians through the centuries. The gospel of Jesus pulls the rug out from under all human hierarchies, Taylor argues. In this brilliantly conceived and scrappy quarrel with Christian supremacy, he calls us to find in the teachings of Jesus and the witness of the early church a model of rebellion against tyrants of all kinds. Because if Jesus is Lord, Caesar isn't.

#TheFatherTheSonAndTheHolyKirk update

… “I’m really hoping that the right will stay united for as long as it takes because we’ve identified that enemy. That enemy is the left and the left wants to destroy everything that’s good, true and beautiful. It is a deranged movement. It’s, as people say, it’s filled with people who are disgusting freaks who through their resentment want to pretty much recreate their resentment and their own self-hatred in the world. They’d rather live in filth and see their enemies oppressed and suppressed; that is the right or anything that is true and beautiful.”

“This is a moment where you can communicate to your kind of normie evangelical friends that the left actually is an evil presence and that through the force of law and through the Constitution, these things can be suppressed. Public universities receive public funding and so it should be dictated what [benefits the] public. ... If it’s a public university, you ought to support the virtues that the nation recognizes; virtues and not evil. So, there’s things that by law you ought to suppress. The left dominates the universities. They not only do not educate—they do not teach people what’s good, true, and beautiful—they actually inculcate the sort of thinking that would lead to the sort of people who would support the murdering of Charlie Kirk.”

“God is a god of justice, and he’s ordained powers such that justice would be enacted in society. And, more than that, wickedness and unrighteousness would be suppressed, that the civil sword would be a terror to wickedness. That’s why God ordained civil power. And we have to kind of communicate that we can do that through our own heritage and traditions and constitutional order to suppress what is evil. That’s the whole purpose of government. That’s the purpose even of our government, even constitutionally; it is to suppress what is evil and to reward what is good. And so I think there’s a moment where we can communicate that.”

“This is not exploiting a moment. People are jarred and there’s a call to conscience where you’re taken out and sort of transcending from the moment, from your immediate concerns and you begin to reflect on what we’ve become, where we’re at and what we need to do. And this is where you can say, ‘Look, justice, righteousness. We need to be a nation under God. We need to return to what we were at the founding and really [for] a century and a half throughout this country, which was to be a Christian republic.’ We need to return to that and restore the Christian politics that is to suppress evil. So, it’s a moment that we have that we can really try to communicate that to people.” [First reported on Right Wing Watch.]

UPDATE
Trump nominee to be assistant secretary of state for international organizations

President Donald Trump's nominee to be assistant secretary of state for international organizations reportedly deleted thousands of inflammatory posts that praised Jan. 6 rioters and called for the execution of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

In a report on Thursday, CNN said that Jeremy Carl's posts were uncovered even though he deleted them from X and asked for them to be removed from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.

Carl wrote in 2023 that Jan. 6 defendants were more oppressed than Black Americans under Jim Crow. He later said that American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten should be "tried for crimes against America's children and would get the death penalty."

Only two days after the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Carl accused then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of a "military coup" and said that she "must be prosecuted."

Carl repeatedly used heated rhetoric against Democrats, calling them "evil" and "the real fascists."

"There is no 'peaceful coexistence' we are going to have when our opposition is led by people like this. We either win or die," he wrote in 2021.

According to Carl, white people who celebrated Juneteenth had "already surrendered."

"Imagine thinking the Great replacement is a conspiracy theory," he wrote in 2021, referring to a racist theory that white people were being replaced in the U.S.

"I would rather be a Black man on trial for the assault of a white man in 1930s rural Mississippi than I would be a right-winger in DC today on trial for political crimes," one post said after members of the Proud Boys were found guilty of seditious conspiracy for the Jan. 6 attack.

The revelation about Carl's social media activity came as conservatives blamed Democrats for extremist rhetoric in the wake of the murder of MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk.

I am compelled to be Franks with you

The “censorship industrial complex” operates like other thought-terminating cliches such as “the woke mind virus” or “cancel culture”: as a way for powerful people to invert reality as well as First Amendment doctrine. This victim-claiming tactic seeks not only to distract the American people from the efforts of the government to engage in actual censorship, but to disguise these censorship efforts as free speech.

But the American people can see what is happening. The current President of the United States is ordering lawful residents to be kidnapped and expelled from the country because of their speech. He is dictating what words people are allowed to use, what educational institutions are allowed to teach, what values businesses are allowed to promote. He is declaring any person he disagrees with to be a criminal. He is calling for critics and dissenters to be imprisoned and assaulted. He is threatening journalists, students, judges, lawyers, religious leaders, governors—anyone he deems insufficiently loyal and insufficiently obedient. Trump’s message could not be clearer: you either bbow down to him, or you will be punished. This is what censorship looks like.

You are members of the United States Senate, government officials tasked with the sacred duty of serving the American public—not a self-professed king and not his wealthy jester—and honoring their constitutional rights. This is a president who has declared himself above the law, including the First Amendment. Those who truly wish to fight censorship should start with him.
Dr Franks' conclusion of her opening statement during this weeks' testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Following up on a prior review post.

Fundamentalism is as alive and well in law as it is in religion. I have seen firsthand how often people use the Constitution the way religious fundamentalists use the Bible—selectively, self-servingly, and in bad faith.

Much as the evangelical community I was raised in focused on verses about homosexuality or women’s inferiority while ignoring the Golden Rule, constitutional fundamentalists focus on individual rights of speech and bearing arms while disregarding the equal protection guarantees of the Fourteenth Amendment. This is not just a tactic of conservatives, whose affinity for Christian fundamentalism is no secret, but also of self-identified liberals. I was not particularly surprised when National Rifle Association supporters and Breitbart readers denounced my work on gun violence as an attack on the Constitution; I was more taken aback when American Civil Liberties Union representatives and self-identified liberals made similar claims about my efforts to protect intimate privacy rights.

As I have fielded e-mails, phone messages, and social media posts threatening me with job loss, rape, and death, I have been struck by another parallel between religious and constitutional fundamentalism: the tendency to engage in a tactic I call victim-claiming. Often used in conjunction with victim-blaming, which attempts to deprive victims of sympathy, victim-claiming attempts to generate sympathy for perpetrators. Victim-claiming is a reversal technique that puts the powerful in the the space of the vulnerable, the abuser in the space of the abused. It is the theme that disturbed me as a young reader of the Bible, which often portrays powerful men as suffering at the hands of their supposed inferiors. The point of such passages seemed to be the justification of the use of violence by the powerful against the vulnerable.

The fundamentalist reading of the Constitution, especially of the First and Second Amendments, produces the same effect. The most powerful and privileged people in America—white men—cast themselves as an underclass engaged in a protracted struggle against the women and minorities seeking to censor and disarm them.

I was moved to write this book because I believe that good faith can conquer bad. I believe that good faith in the Constitution, in particular, is both possible and necessary. I wrote this book to make the case against fundamentalism and for the principle of reciprocity expressed in Christianity’s Golden Rule, Kant’s categorical imperative, and the Fourteenth Amendment’s equal protection clause. I wrote this book to advocate for the position that the only rights any of us should have are the rights that all of us should have. If only some of us are saved, all of us are lost…

Her March 25th Senate Judiciary Committee Testimony was riveting

GOP senators picked on the wrong woman. David Newhoff nails it:
If [Louisiana GOP] Sen. Kennedy had an ounce of guts or a modicum integrity, he would argue either that Franks misstates the law or, perhaps, that she correctly states the law, but misstates the facts alleged about the “censorship industrial complex.” Instead, the senator and the cyber-mob he incited could not have more ably proven Franks’s critique of First Amendment history if they had read her book and tried intentionally to do so.

Like many examples in the book, this powerful office holder, while whining that he’s being “censored,” whips up a hate-storm of violent threats designed to silence a citizen whose only power is her voice. Also, the optics are hard to ignore. If Kennedy’s five minutes were a movie scene, the Southern White male throwing his weight around while acting offended that anyone would suggest that white male privilege exists, would be panned by critics as too on the nose. The only things missing were a fan and a Mint Julep…
Read all of it. David is spot-on.

Burning Down Washington

to "save" America.

Kevin Roberts is President of The Heritage Foundation—a $100M/yr political lobbying business masquerading as a legit IRS non-profit 501(c)(3) "charity." This book had been scheduled for release in September 2024, but they delayed its publication until after the presidential election (likely owing in part to the "Forward" written by Trump running mate JD Vance, he of #HillbillyIshtar renown). They also altered the book cover art, removing the matchstick image and changing "Burning Down Washington" to the somewhat less, well—"inflammatory"—"Taking Back Washington."

Nonetheless, the incendiary allusions remain peppered throughout the pages.

Yeah...

He's on a roll with this riff.

Some encapsulatory le essense du Roberts:
The Permanent Things

What, then, are “the eternal rules of order and right” that Washington saw as being beyond a matter of opinion? They’re what Russell Kirk called “the permanent things.”

Today, the assault on the American way of life is aimed not just at our Constitution and political traditions but more insidiously at the foundations of civilization, which is to say, the permanent things. There is no point in preserving certain political forms if the society they were meant to protect has died.

The Party of Creation needs to
get over the old conservatism’s reluctance to “impose” its “values” on others [emphasis BG]. There is no way to avoid taking a stance on the practices that sustain the human race. We can say with certainty what the “permanent things,” the vital tasks of any culture, are. The aegis of every civilization protected them; the best of all that has been thought and said from each distinctive human culture has pointed to them.

Family: Men and women should marry (and do so younger than most do today). They should marry for life and should bring children into the world (more than most do today). Parents have the right and responsibility to raise their children, to educate them, to pass on their traditions, and to make important family decisions (including rejecting experimental medical treatments) in line with their conscience and values. Children owe their parents a measure of obedience and gratitude, and family members should take care of one another. The nuclear family is the foundation of the human order, but it should reach beyond itself to form the fabric of an extended family, community, and local place.

Faith: Mankind is made to worship, and our republic depends on the moral strength and habits of heart brought about by piety. We have in this country a glorious tradition of religious freedom, but it is not freedom from religion but freedom for religion. A man’s religious tradition is a matter of his conscience, but that we have a faithful people is a matter of public concern. Accordingly, the state must not discriminate against religious organizations in government programs, and freedom of religion should take precedence over the enforcement of other rights. Policies that encourage religious observance, such as Sabbath laws and voucher programs that include religious schools, should be encouraged. American society is rooted in the Christian faith—certainly public institutions should not establish anything offensive to Christian morals under the guise of “religious freedom” or “diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Community: Americans’ pride has always been in their communities, the “little platoons” where citizens freely associate with one another and practice self-government. In communities, people from different backgrounds and walks of life orient themselves around the common good in its most concrete and practical form. Communities are places where we lift up one another’s burdens and practice the art of neighborliness, but also where we celebrate the holy days and feast together. If they are well ordered, our communities permit a feeling of comfort and safety at any hour of the day.

Work: Man is Homo faber, the animal that makes. By his labors, man provides for himself and his family. There is deep dignity in work, in the ownership one has of a job well done, that cannot be replaced by simply giving someone something they have not worked for or earned. Moreover, we know that the material prosperity that makes many of the other elements of the human order possible comes from productive human labor and the habits of discipline, skill, and care that undergird that productivity. At the same time, there is an appropriate time to rest from our labors together with our families and communities. The division of labor has also held political significance throughout human history. In the Western tradition, a republican government befitted only men who were masters of themselves, who were economically self-sufficient.

Nation: Man’s gratitude toward all the “little platoons” of human order culminate in his devotion to his broader nation and homeland. In a republic, this is experienced as a duty to safeguard the res publica, literally “the public thing” but better translated as “the common good.” The nation is cemented by a shared national origin story, according to which all citizens are “brothers, and children of the self-same earth” (literally or figuratively). Our deepest traditions about the purposes of government are reflected in the ancient ceremony for crowning England’s kings, when the archbishop of Canterbury hands to his sovereign the Sword of State with these words: “With this sword do justice, stop the growth of iniquity, protect the holy Church of God and all people of goodwill, help and defend widows and orphans, restore the things that are gone to decay, maintain the things that are restored, punish and reform what is amiss, and confirm what is in good order.”
Mix in a bit of blinding-glimpses-of-the-obvious Norman Rockwell-isms (cosplaying at profundities) with Cat 5 Aggrievedness and off you go.

BLOGGER'S NOTE
I typically personally buy at retail and fully read the hundreds of books I cite / excerpt / review here. I rarely get a publisher's comp pre-pub "galley." I then cite lengthy, complete, relevant passages from the works under review. My readers can decide for themselves the worthiness of the content. Implicit in this approach, to be sure, is that my very choosing of the excerpts I do implies my assessment of their value (good or bad).

I don't do this for money, never have. I fall well within "Fair Use."

The Kevin Roberts excerpts set forth above, however, come from the Amazon "Look Inside" preview. I have better uses for the $14.99 Kindle edition, given the breadth of excellent volumes out there, and my extensive prior study of Mr, Roberts (Mr. No-Life here even read his doctoral dissertation. Seriously, I did that.).
It can't be defamatory. They're HIS words. And, within his writing you will find no shortage of recurrent, sharp-elbowed, condescending MAGA-resonant vitriol. More broadly, his microphone and video camera lens affinities are matters of ample, lengthy partisan public record.

"There is no time—or room—for an insurgency. The Left captured the military quickly, and we must reclaim it at a faster pace. We must wage a frontal assault. A swift counterattack, in broad daylight. 2. Overhauling National Security and Intelligence

Trump's plan includes removing individuals from national security and intelligence agencies who have engaged in corrupt practices or have used these agencies against political adversaries.

3. Reform of FISA Courts
He proposes a comprehensive reform of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) courts to address issues where judges have ignored misleading information in warrant applications.

While we're citing books, this is topically pertinent:

This one is by Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts. It had been scheduled for release in September, but they've delayed it until November 12th, a week after the election. It contains an inconvenient "Forward" by Trump running mate J.D. Vance.

There's a brief "sample" on Amazon (non-downloadable) comprising the first half-dozen pages of Chapter 1. It does not include the J.D. Vance Forward.

Another curiosity: They altered the original cover art text. Note that "Burning Down Washington" (w/ the cute little wooden matchstick) is now the more bland Project 2025-ish, "Taking Back Washinton."

UNHUMANS

FOREWORD BY
[INMATE] STEPHEN K. BANNON

In Unhumans, the authors focus on the critical matter of what actually makes us human. They note that “humanity” only happens when you have an actual civilization—principles of civility, rules of law and order, respect for basic human rights. Great civilizations have always organized and risen from these characteristics, from the ancient world to the Roman Empire to the West today.

The authors argue that it is humanity itself currently under threat. They unwrap the history of Communism, a dehumanizing philosophy of oppression, of denial of human rights and nihilism. The reader is guided around the world, revealing the stories and histories the mainstream press won’t touch … from Cambodia, Nicaragua, Chile, Afghanistan and the Soviets, to Apartheid in South Africa. They bring us right up to President Donald Trump and January 6th, a day they correctly call “America’s Inverse Bastille.”

…“Unhumans” simply refers to those Homo sapiens who seek nothing but destruction of human society, borne of grievance and misery and nihilism. Unquestionably, we are in a period of this unhuman ascension. Unhumans is a clarion call to every American citizen. Be aware. Too often, the most dire and significant moments in history are only realized afterward, when civilizations are already defeated or too broken to continue. If you love this country, read this book. Study this book. Share this book. And understand this: The very survival of the American Republic is now on the shoulders of every American.

INTRODUCTION
PETTY RESENTMENT AND CRUELTY

Communism is when ugly deformed freaks make it illegal to be normal then rob and/or kill all successful people out of petty resentment and cruelty. The ideology is all just window dressing. —@MysteryGrove
This is not a book about communist ideology. You’ve read those. This is a book about the communist reality—and how to tell when it’s coming to a society near you.

History does not repeat, but it rhymes. For as long as there have been beauty and truth, love and life, there have also been the ugly liars who hate and kill. This is the way of things in all things. There is light and there is dark. Always has been. Always will be. Civilization is the superstructure built on law and order that keeps the petty, the resentful, and the cruel away from the rest of us. Some societies have been better at this than others. Those who fail at repelling the repulsive fall to unhumanity—to a state of affairs in which human thriving is impossible and surviving improbable.

It doesn’t matter what you call these the people of anti-civilization. They will change their name, shape, and form as needed and for their own purposes in their unique time and place. For the last couple centuries, we’ve known them as communists. Socialists, with extra steps. And of course, leftists. Radicals and revolutionaries as well. A hundred years ago, Marxist-Leninists, then more recently, Cultural Marxists. Even as, without irony and not as a joke, “progressives.” For the purposes of this book, we will call them the unhumans. This is a book about unhumans, and this is what they do: With power, unhumans undo civilization itself. They undo order. They undo the basic bonds of society that make communities and nations possible. They destroy the human rights of life, liberty, and property—and undo their own humanity in the process by fully embracing nihilism, cynicism, and envy.

“Unhuman”—isn’t that harsh? Yes, and it also happens to be correct. By becoming consumed by nihilism, unhumans oppose everything that makes up humanity. As they are opposed to humanity itself, they place themselves outside of the category completely, in an entirely new misery-driven subdivision, the unhuman. They specifically reject the human rights of others. So if and when they get their way, they will unhuman you, too. They convert, and that which they cannot convert, they destroy. And they will call this evil, good.

But that’s not how it starts. It all begins with a wedge between two identifiable groups in a given society—the haves, and the have-nots, which they prefer to call the oppressor and the oppressed, respectively. Now, many have-nots do aspire to more, and they earn every bit of it. But some of them stop dreaming. Some don’t in the first place. And the trouble is, these men and women find each other. They have shared grievances, real and imagined. And then … they unite. There are parades and protests. Then power. All of a sudden, it’s theirs, all theirs. Then they rob and they kill. Any ideology preached along the way is just window dressing.

They don’t believe what they say. They don’t care about winning debates. They don’t even want equality. They just want an excuse to destroy everything. They want an excuse to destroy you.

This is what they do.

And this book is how we stop them.

Posobiec, Jack; Lisec, Joshua (2024). Unhumans: The Secret History of Communist Revolutions (and How to Crush Them). Skyhorse Publishing. Kindle Edition.

This is where we are. Yet again.

The America Under Attack dude:
Evidence of the devil’s success is all around us. That is the real story of the political, social and moral transformation of America. Satan has been influencing the minds of the elites in particular, increasingly steering policy and shaping public discourse. The mainstream media have been overcome by the devil. This has influenced millions of people. NEVER HAS ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED BEFORE. NEVER HAVE AMERICANS SEEN SUCH A SATANIC ABERRATION IN THEIR PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS.

2 Corinthians 11:14 reveals that “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” He is skilled at deceit and intimidation, and he is using these powers to conquer this nation.

That is what the Michael Hastings example is all about. By Mr. Obama’s second term, Satan had all the mainstream media “swooning”! THE REPORTERS SWOONED AS THE DEVIL TOOK CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY.

This book tells the full story of how Satan has gotten a stranglehold on America. And as you will see, he has done so by using one man—a man with such arrogance that he opened himself up to terrible satanic influence.

This book also shows how God confronted the attack on America that took place during President Obama’s two terms. It reveals the crucial role Donald Trump fulfilled, a role also prophesied in the Bible. It provides spiritual perspective on the presidency of Joe Biden, who is effectively a front man for a third Obama term. And it gives you the stunning revelation—made plain in prophecy—of how this satanic attack will be STOPPED.

Prophecy shows that Mr. Trump’s role in U.S. politics is not over. But what happens when he returns to power will shock you.

It is critical to see the devil’s influence in what is happening. But you must also see God’s hand. This gives you wonderful perspective, even amid some of the darkest days our nation has ever faced. Knowing why God is allowing this, and how He plans to use these events to ultimately bless every American and every other human being, will give you unsurpassed vision and hope!

Flurry, Gerald; Church of God, Philadelphia. America Under Attack: Bible prophecy will help you understand the treason in our country. (pp. 12-13). Philadelphia Church of God. Kindle Edition.
Lovely. The Flurry book is (unintentionally) Comedy Gold. UnHumans and America Under Attack both rise to the deliberative level of Marvel Comics. Posobiec and Lisec obviously think they are the sole brilliant purveyors of "the real truth about Communism." There's gotta be a DSM-V code for that poignant conceit. Guys, seriously? Or is it really just about marketing to the MAGA rubes? Confirmation Bias on Fentanyl.

Kevin Robert's book Taking Back Washington... will not be released until September—and reportedly will contain a Foreword by JD Vance (uh, what if Trump dumps him). No preview samples are available, as far as I know. It's a pretty safe bet that it will basically be a regurgitation of his "Project 2025" schtick (see also here).
Mr. No-Life here dug out Kevin Roberts' UTexas doctoral dissertation and am about 20% through it. Fairly well written. Focuses on the history of slavery in Louisiana during the 1791-1831 pre-statehood era. Interesting enough as a historical "study," I guess. Doesn't provide much insight regarding his eventual slippage off the tracks of rationality.
